How can I make this hobby into a small “business”..?
Question by Missy Awesome: How can I make this hobby into a small “business“..?
I love to make things, crafts, scrapbooks, soaps, body scrubs/oils, bath soaks, etc. I’d really like to start selling the bath products, but I just don’t know where to begin. I make them all in my home, of course, and I bottle them in mason jars finished with some fabric and ribbons to make it attractive, but I have no idea how to get my hobby “out there”! Any ideas? Ideally I’d like to market them to local salons or spas, but again, I don’t know how. Thanks!

Sign up for a table at a local craft fair. See if you get a good response. Have business cards available.

go to the local areas that would sell products similar to these that you make and ask the manager if they could sell your products for you. you would have to give them a share of the profits though
your stepping into Pandora box in starting a business, here are just a few things you need to do aside from the other million.
Business name
Tax ID number
labeling your product with ALL ingredients or will may have a lawsuit on your hands for not mentioning what is in the product, allergy reasons
Promoting your business
Business cards, flyers, postcards etc.
Selling your product wholesale to salons, mom and pop stores etc.
this is just a few things you need to do.
I’d recommend the Arts/Crafts Business site on About.com – you’ll probably find most of what you need there.
You can try to join an organizations or clubs that have a regular market fair participation. In this way, other people can help you through the process of selling your products and this will give you knowledge in how to market it.
Woa woa woa, want the easy answer?
ETSY.com
It works basically like Ebay, (but not an auction) and you get paid through either mailed payments or paypal. the nice thing is that the listings only cost 20cents each and last like 4 months. its littered with people, and once you get a good number of people buying from you, they keep buying from you.

ive been selling on etsy a little over a year, and took a break to join the military and have a baby, now im back, and got it up and running again.
Its easy, no membership fees, and theres a way for you to search requests people have made for custom items they want made for them, people respond and give them a price.
